A history of Bury Rangers FC
1965 — present
Bury Rangers Football Club was founded in 1965 and has grown to become one of Hertfordshire's largest and most respected grassroots football clubs. As one of the first youth football clubs in Hertford, it has played an important role in developing local football for more than six decades.
The early decades
For approximately thirty years, Bury Rangers developed steadily as a traditional community football club. During this time, generations of players, coaches, volunteers and supporters became part of the club's story, creating a strong family atmosphere that remains at its heart today.
Although youth football existed throughout this period, growth was gradual rather than dramatic. The club built a reputation for friendly competition, dedicated volunteers and providing opportunities for local footballers across a wide range of age groups. These formative decades laid the foundations for everything that followed, creating a stable organisation ready to respond to the increasing popularity of youth football at the turn of the millennium.
A period of rapid growth
Around 2000, the club embarked on an ambitious development programme focused on expanding its youth football provision. At the start of this period, Bury Rangers had approximately 30 senior players and around 140 youth players. Through investment in coaching, volunteer recruitment and improved organisation, membership grew rapidly.
By 2007, the club had more than 300 registered players, making it one of the fastest-growing grassroots football clubs in Hertfordshire. Boys' football experienced significant growth, with teams introduced across numerous age groups to meet increasing demand.
Launching girls' football
In 2008, Bury Rangers launched its girls' section, marking another important chapter in the club's history. The programme quickly flourished, reflecting the growing popularity of women's and girls' football across England. This expansion reinforced the club's commitment to providing football opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender, while further strengthening its role within the local community.
Recognised for quality
As participation increased, the club remained committed to maintaining the highest standards rather than simply growing in size. Bury Rangers became one of the first clubs in Hertfordshire to achieve the Football Association's highest level of Charter Standard accreditation as an FA Charter Standard Community Club. This recognised the club's excellence in coaching, safeguarding, child welfare, volunteer development and long-term sustainability.
The accreditation demonstrated that Bury Rangers had evolved into a well-managed organisation dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment for players of all ages and abilities.
Bury Rangers today
Since achieving Community Club status, Bury Rangers has continued to broaden its football provision. Today, the club offers a wide range of opportunities, fielding numerous boys', girls', women's and youth teams while serving more than 1000 members each season. Its programme now extends beyond traditional football to include futsal, inclusive football, walking football, and Turn Up and Play sessions for both men and women, ensuring football is accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
Training and matches take place at modern facilities across Hertford, including the Richard Hale School 3G facility and the Presdales School 3G facility, enabling the club to provide high-quality coaching and playing opportunities throughout the year.
Rooted in the community
Alongside league football, Bury Rangers remains deeply involved in the local community through fundraising initiatives, community events and volunteer-led projects that strengthen its connection with local residents. The club continues to invest in coach education, player welfare and inclusive football opportunities, remaining true to the values established during its period of expansion in the early 2000s.
Today, Bury Rangers FC is recognised as one of Hertfordshire's leading grassroots football organisations and proudly holds 3 star FA Accreditation status, reflecting its commitment to excellence across every aspect of club development.

The club's history is defined not by professional success or national trophies, but by its unwavering commitment to community service, volunteer dedication and the opportunity it has provided for thousands of children, young people and adults to enjoy football in a safe, welcoming and well-organised environment.
